Saturday, September 21 at 3 and 8pm The Yellow Wallpaper: A Staged Adaptation at Florida City Youth Center Presented by Phillip Church in partnership with NAMI and HCA -- The Yellow Wallpaper: A Staged Adaptation of a thought-provoking production takes place at the Florida City Youth Center, 650 NW 5th Ave. 19th century author and social advocate, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper is based on the unsettling account of having just given birth to what one surmises to be her first child. The mother, whose name is withheld from the reader, is compelled by her physician-husband to follow 19th century best practices by recuperating for three months in an isolated, rural mansion far from friends, family, and uncalled-for distractions. While medical science has since identified this condition as post-partum depression, sixty years ago such behavior was merely regarded as emotional hysteria. Gilman's advocacy later influenced critical changes to the misguided practices so many women endured. Donations are welcome. Get details and RSVP online. |
