Friday, June 13, the second Friday in June, is National Movie Night, a chance to celebrate the tradition of movie nights with friends and family. Saturday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union. Saturday, June 14 is the anniversary of the U.S. Army, founded on this day in 1775, when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army with six companies of expert riflemen in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia. The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington to command all the Continental forces and began laying the foundation for the American army. Saturday, June 14 is National Bourbon Day, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the spirit of American Bourbon, a type of Whiskey made predominantly from corn, along with malted barley, wheat or rye, originally produced strictly in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. Wednesday, June 18, is National Fishing Day, encouraging us to drop a line -- in the nearest stream, pond, lake, or river. Taking a break from the daily routine to bait a hook and catch some fish can be a relaxing endeavor, especially with kids. Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth Day -- in the year 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. The traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda. Friday, June 20 is American Eagle Day, commemorating the day in 1782, when the bird was added to the official Seal of the United States. Friday, June 20 is the day of the Summer Soltice, the moment the Sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere; and the longest day of sunlight. Sun rises at 6:30am and sets at 8:14pm. |

Saturday, June 14 at 2pm Jimbo's Shrimp Shack - The Documentary The Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade are pleased to present an enlightening and entertaining program about the history of a somewhat infamous South Florida location on Virginia Key — Jimbo's Shrimp Shack. Gone, but not forgotten, this iconic shrimp shack location -- hidden in plain sight at the end of the road on Virginia Key -- was ostensibly a simple place for fishermen to buy live shrimp bait, but it was so much more. To the regular customers, it was a place to buy smoked fish and cold beer, play bocce ball and relax aside a beautiful natural lagoon. To the movie, television and photography industries, it was an authentic outdoor set that mimicked an island fishing village. To the gregarious proprietor James "Jimbo" Luznar, it was a family business that attracted a cast of interesting characters, and a place to host friends and neighbors apart from the hustle-bustle of Greater Miami.
