Sunday, February 1 is National Freedom Day, a chance to reflect on and remember the importance of freedom as a basic tenet, a founding principle, a bedrock doctrine of our society. Sunday, February 1 is the first day of Black History Month, a time for remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. Monday, February 2 is Groundhog Day, celebrated with Punxsutawney Phil who, if frightened by his shadow, will return to his burrow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil does not see his shadow, then spring is on the way. Tuesday, February 3 is Feed The Birds Day, recognizing the value of wild birds in the local environment. Tuesday, February 3 is National Missing Persons Day, focusing the country's attention on those that have gone missing at home or abroad. Wednesday, February 4 is National Girls and Women in Sports Day, reflecting on the day in 1987 that President Ronald Reagan declared the first National Women in Sports Day in recognition of the history of women's athletics. It also recognized the progress made by the Title IX amendment passed in 1972. Wednesday, February 4 is National Thank A Mail Carrier Day, an opportunity to show appreciation for those tireless civil servants that deliver the mail. Their motto was "Neither rain, or snow, nor death of night, can keep us from our duty." On Saturday, February 7, it's Send A Friend A Card Day, time to send friendly cheer through the mail. We do that by sending a note or message on a card to the friends we hold dear. Sunday, February 8 is Boy Scouts Day, celebrating the birthday of the American scouting movement on February 8, 1910. Sunday, February 8 is Super Bowl Day, the pinnacle of the American football season with the NFL championship game, a massive American cultural event that unites millions through high-stakes football, major entertainment (halftime shows), iconic advertising, economic impact for host cities, and traditions like parties and food, making it a unique blend of sports, business, and national spectacle far beyond just a game. |
