Friday, August 26 is Women's Equality Day, celebrating the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States' Constitution on August 26, 1920. Friday, August 26 is also National Dog Day, an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in American families. Tuesday, August 30 is Ganesh Chaturthi, beginning a 10-day Hindu festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, the god of prosperity and wisdom. Monday, September 5, first Monday of September, is Labor Day, honoring the American labor movement. It's traditionally a time to celebrate American workers; the unofficial end of summer season; and a popular weekend for final summer vacation road trips. Sunday, September 11 is Patriot Day, with a moment of silence at 8:46am commemorating the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing nearly 3000 people. Patriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775. The First Sunday of September following Labor Day (September 11) is also known as National Grandparents Day, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, honoring all grandparents. More than four million greeting cards are sent within the United States each year on National Grandparents Day. The Third Friday of September (September 16) is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a time to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. |
