Monday, September 4 -- the first Monday in September -- is Labor Day, a national holiday that celebrates the American worker, the American labor movement and the great strides of progress made in securing fair wages and decent working conditions. It's also been the traditional end of summertime and beginning of the school year, and an opportunity for family gatherings and last-minute vacation adventures during the three day weekend. Sunday, September 10 is National Grandparents Day, an opportunity to honor all grandparents through a range of activities such as gift-giving, card-giving, and for children to invite their grandparents to school for a day where they participate in special lessons or special assembly programs. Monday, September 11 is Patriot Day, remembering the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, when nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. The economic, cultural and emotional impact was immense. Friday, September 15 is National POW/MIA Recognition Day as we pause to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. |
