In celebration of the 2017 Florida Archaeology Month “Engineers of the Mississippian,” the Deering Estate will host its 5th annual Archaeology Day. Activities and programs for the entire family include educational activities and walking tours of the Estate’s unique natural areas. Admission: $7 for ages 4 & older.

Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida’s rich cultural heritage.

Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2017 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.

The program schedule for Saturday, March 18, 10:00am to 4:00pm:

10:00 am – 3:00 pm: Living Classroom
Do you like to look for clues? Do you think you are a good detective? Maybe you are an Archaeologist? Discover how archaeologists investigate life in the past through fun, hands-on activities in our Living Classroom.

10:30 am & 3:00 pm: Historic House Tour
Join one of our Interpretive Staff on a guided tour to hear the amazing history of the Richmond Cottage, the first hotel between Coconut Grove and Key West, and the Stone House, a tiny piece of Deering’s beloved Barcelona recreated on Biscayne Bay.

11:00 am & 1:00 pm: Demonstration Archaeological Adventure
Participants will learn about the people and cultures that existed in South Florida before modern development. They will uncover artifacts and eco-facts in our demonstration archaeological site. Participants will use their scientific and critical thinking skills to determine how these artifacts were made and what purposes they may have served.

12:30 pm: Tequesta Walking Tour
Go on a walking tour of the Estate’s natural areas with interpretive guide. Learn about geology and archaeology and how we are preserving our past for future generations.
