Attention nature lovers: it’s National Take a Hike Day on November 17th. Enjoy the Tropical Hammock Walk at Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center — one of the last great natural hammocks in the Redland Region — from 3 to 4pm.
The resident naturalist will lead you around the preserve and into the nature trail located right behind the nature center.
This 112-acre park and preserve contains a mature tropical hardwood forest with a half-mile self-guided nature trail. The park was named in honor of James S. Castellow, a citrus farmer who homesteaded the property in the early 1900s.
In 1974, the park became one of the first environmental education centers in Miami-Dade County and is popular with birders, butterfly watchers, and botanists. The park serves as a wonderful place for city dwellers to get close to nature and rejuvenate the spirit.
The cost of the nature walk is $2.
Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center is located at 22301 SW 162nd Ave, Miami, Florida 33170
