Learn detailed information about limes and carambolas in this beginning level class at the Extension office auditorium from 9am to 1:30pm. Basic tropical fruit horticulture like pruning, planting, fertilizing, and pest control, as well as other issues new growers face will be covered. There will also be a field visit to look at these particular crops.
The cost is $15 to $18.
- 9 to 9:30am – Check in and breakfast
- 9:30 to 11am – Growing Limes in South Florida, Jonathan Crane, Tropical Fruit Specialist, UF/IFAS TREC
- 11am to 12:30pm – Growing Carambolas (Star Fruit) in South Florida, Jeff Wasielewski, Commercial Tropical Fruit Extension Agent, UF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County
- 12:30 to 1:30pm – Field visit to TREC to see these crops in the field
Topics covered include: effect of climate and weather on plant growth, relevant botanical information, flowering signals, grove infrastructure, cultivars, propagation, plant spacing, cropping strategy, plant nutrition and fertilization, irrigation, management, pruning and size control, plant growth regulators, harvesting, insect and disease pests and control, disorders, and strategies to survive environmental stresses (e.g., hurricanes, floods).
